Buying for children and babies is not always easy. We want the products we choose to be safe and well-made, but still be attractive and fun.
Le Nid De La Cigogne is run by the energetic and passionate duo of Nahani Grenier and Ingrid Wilken. The idea to open up their store was born after Ingrid returned from a trip to her native Germany and noticed that so many of the great products she found there were not available locally. Nahani joked that they should open a store, but soon the idea became a reality with their first boutique in the Mile End and, most recently, a second location in Monkland Village.
Items in store include beautiful woolen clothes, wooden toys, shoes, hats, bowls and even silk capes for dress up. Many of the products in stock come from Germany or Quebec, and the focus is on fair trade and organic fibers. “We wouldn’t sell stuff that we wouldn’t use ourselves, and we stand behind all of our products,” explained Nahani. If a product is non-organic, there must be a specific reason they would stock it; For example, the shoe brand TOMS (with every pair purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need).
Nahani and Ingrid have chosen some of their favourite items for the little ones on your holiday gift list.
Electric Kidz Sleeper
This cute little sleeper ($38) from Montreal company Electric Kidz is a unique gift for newborns to six months of age. The tie at the bottom makes it easy to open and close and will keep their little legs warmly together.
Atelier Du Cheval De Bois Bath Toys
These pretty little boats ($22 each) are entirely handmade from wood right here in Quebec. They make a great alternative to the usual plastic bath toys and are recommended for ages one and up.
Glückskäfer Stacking Birds
This colourful stacking birds toy ($42) is both beautiful and fun for children to experiment with different ways of stacking them. The wood is minimally finished with no varnish and child-safe colors. This toy is recommended for ages one and up.
Lindjan Leather Shoes
These adorable leather shoes ($38 – $52) are warm, easy to put on and won’t come off unless you take them off. They are soft, flexible and come in a range of colours and sizes from six months and up.
This soft, simple sweater ($36) comes in a variety of colours, and is perfect for keeping your child cozy. The buttons at the shoulder make it easy to slip over their head, and the high quality will last the winter. The sizes start at 0-6 months and go up to 5-6 years.
