Meet the MFW Model: Emilie Dumas

by Jennifer Nachshen

Montreal Fashion Week touches down on the runway today. But the designers aren’t the only local talent heading down the catwalk. We talked to four models who will be walking the runway for various designers, as well as modeling for SPECS Backs MTL,  a promotional campaign featuring 16 new faces from SPECS Model Management wearing Montreal-made fashion. The event takes place on Thursday at 8:30pm at the Arsenal. You can get tickets to Montreal Fashion Week here. Be sure to follow us on instagram at UrbanExpressions for images from the front row!

How did you become a model?

When I was younger, I tried, but it didn’t work. I really wanted to become a model, but when they refused me, I really thought it would never happen. At around the age of 17 years old, I started some modeling classes in a small city close to my hometown, which brought me, two years later, to try again in Montreal to sign with an agency. Then, it worked! I signed with Specs in 2010 and I’ve been growing as a model with them since then. My journey was created by my motivation. I really wanted it.

What do you love about modeling in Montreal?

With time, you start to know everybody. Its kind of a large family, we are always happy to work all together and see each other around the different events of Montreal Fashion scene.

What makes you unique as a model?

I think that question is the same as what makes you unique as a person. It’s definitively my personality. There’s only one Emilie Dumas.

What do you do when you are not modeling?

I’m in school, full time, in Communication at UQAM.

Which shows will you be walking in during Montreal fashion Week?

My shows are still in the process to be confirmed. For now, I’m  walking for Annie 50, Luko Marion and Nisse.

Do you wear Montreal designers in your regular life?

Yes, my winter coat is a Mackage, my favorite jeans are my Second Clothing, some Eve Gravel and I have a beautiful Melissa Nepton dress that I love.

Which Montreal designers’ clothes would you love to have hanging in your closet?

Denis Gagnon, more Melissa Nepton, UNTTLD and many many more.

What is your favourite part about Montreal fashion Week?

I love seeing the new collections of all the Montreal designers and for sure seeing all my model friends all at the same time.

 What makes Montreal fashion unique?

The same reason that makes Montreal unique, Montreal fashion is really artistic and diverse.

What is your advice for Montreal girls who want to become models?

Don’t let anybody discourage you and don’t take the criticism too seriously. Be strong and stay focused.
