We know that it’s only been a few weeks since we kicked off our ambitious New Year’s resolutions but surely bringing a little sweetness into our lives has got to be good for our health, no?
Last summer, I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Halifax. We spent days walking from gallery to museum to port and then back again. Yet, long after we returned home, it was the memory of one tiny shop in the city’s core that we remembered and longed for the most – Freak Lunchbox - a confectionary shop that would put even the fictional Willy Wonka to shame. As luck would have it, this candyland playground has recently opened up shop in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood, and we couldn’t wait to visit!
He went on to explain how thrilled they are to be in Montreal, “Montreal seemed like the next step. It is an amazing city with great culture, beautiful people, amazing artwork and a definite need for a candy store. We feel right at home.”
On our visit, we skipped through the store, stocking up on jellybeans and gummy bears, stopping to admire the old-fashioned penny candy of our childhood. We pranced giddily from lollipop to sugartop, as our basket of goodies quickly filled up. You can visit this shop dozens of times and still marvel at the variety and selection. They make a point of replenishing stock regularly to keep their regulars surprised and delighted. Daniel explains, “We are going to be getting some imports from France soon – after all, we are in Quebec! So far our big sellers here are the savory crickets, bacon flavoured soda-pop (yes, really!), and of course, the Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup Pez!”
So about those resolutions…crickets are bursting with protein and the bacon pop (there is a peanut butter & jam flavoured one too!) contain far fewer calories than the real deal. So, it looks like we’ll be able to stick to our resolutions after all
