“And there’s continuity, too. I can come home to my mother’s apartment and I don’t have to bring any clothes, because we’re the same size. It’s great, because I don’t have to throw them away or put them in storage, but can keep her memory alive.”

“Other things I miss include a better lifestyle. I miss having a Medicare card and the local CLSC. Health care is so much more direct in Canada than it is in the States. I find it incredibly complicated here.

“I miss getting on the bike and going to a café and not worrying about whether I’m succeeding in life or not. New York is so much more ambitious. I miss wrapping myself up in hats and gloves and mitts and going to someone’s house and leaving them in a pile in a corner with all the salty boots. I miss winter. It’s cold here but there’s usually no snow, you can’t go cross-country skiing, there isn’t really a culture of skating. My direct family, my cousins, are very active people. They’ll drink some beer and go out skating at night. That’s sort of a fun culture. I miss those kind of warm, fuzzy feelings.
