My Montreal: Monica Wehlan

by Dayna Lapkovsky

From slinking down the runway in New York Fashion week for Viktor Luna to gracing the cover of RSVP magazine with Sir Richard Branson, Montreal model Monica Wehlan has been making her mark in fashion since she was 15 years old.

But this Shakira look-a-like is not just a pretty face. This quadrilingual beauty holds a degree in Economics, is an action hero fanatic and can kick your butt in Super Mario Bros… Yes, she is the real-life Big Bang Theory fantasy woman.

This self-proclaimed nerd’s career got a jump-start when she landed her first gig modeling for lingerie brand La Vie en Rose. Since then, she has worked with many other Montreal-based designers and brands including Femme de Carriere , Rush Couture, Reitmans , Simon Chang, Pajar, Skinny B!tch Denim and Dino Gaspari. When she is not posing for pretty pictures, this charming German/Mexican model can be found hosting an online video game show called Game Brief.

Which neighbourhood do you call “home?” What do you love about it?

I was born and raised in Laval. When I was 10 years old I moved to the West-Island. Then I moved to the Monkland Village before ending up in Old Montreal. However, the place I feel most at home is definitely at my cottage in St-Donat. I spent every summer there growing up. As soon as I get there, I just feel so happy and at peace. I’m all about the mountains and the lakes!

Where do you get your caffeine fix?

Since I live in Old Montreal, I usually walk over to Olive & Gourmando. It’s so trendy and the service is incredible. They also play the best music, including my favorite album from Bon Iver. I also really love Café Veritas. I just love what they do with the foam on my cappuccinos — I always ask them to design me a little heart.

Who makes the best cocktail in Montreal?

I really enjoy Le Lab in the Plateau, they have such a unique selection and the ambiance is very New York. The cocktails are just very original and so very strong.

Where do you shop for the perfect party outfit?

My wardrobe is very casual. I love shopping at Bench and American Eagle Outfitters. When it comes to something dressier, I love Vero Moda, BCBG and Marciano. I also love Rudsak; they have such stylish leather jackets and bags, and a great women’s wear collection.

What are your favourite restaurants in Montreal?

I love Tavern on the Square (1 Westmount Square, Westmount, 514-989-9779). The food and service is amazing. I go to Bevo in Old Montreal at least once a week, the Nutella pizza is a must! I’m also a huge Sho-Dan sushi fan.

Where do you get your hair done?

I get my hair done at Salon Bliss in the West-Island. They have amazing products and they really give you what you ask for. (4309-A Blvd. St Jean, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, 514-626-6111)

Which Montreal social events do you look forward to all year?

I really admire the McGill Head and Neck Cancer Fundraiser event that took place at the Mega Blocks headquarters this past year. It was a lot of fun and such a great cause. I’m also a huge fan of the Arts and really had an amazing time at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens gala event. It was just so classy, plus I got to sit at the head table with the famous ballerinas.

How do you unwind?

I’m really hooked on watching hockey. Every time my girls want to go out I always say no because I am home alone watching any hockey game that’s on at the moment. It’s my “me” time. I just get so into it… I guess it’s a Canadian thing!
